Eric Bibb w/Grant Dermody. Opening set by Paula Boggs

Genre: Acoustic Rock , Blues , Country , Country Rock

  1. Monday, October 11 7:30 PM (All ages)

Eric was born In New York into a musical family. Eric's father, Leon Bibb, is a trained singer who sang in musical theatre and made a name for himself as part of the 1960's New York folk scene. His uncle was the world famous jazz pianist and composer John Lewis, of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Family friends included Pete Seeger, Odetta and actor/singer/activist Paul Robeson, Eric's godfather.

A performance by Eric Bibb is an enriching experience – both musically and spiritually. Purveying a beautifully realised and deftly accomplished, soulful and gospel infused, folk- blues, Eric has no problem melding a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle contemporary sensibility. As one critic wrote, “Eric’s singing and versatile guitar playing fuses a variety of genres to become a New World Blues.”

On Eric's latest album, he channels delta guitar master Booker White to craft blues for a new era. The story is as legendary as Robert Johnson at the crossroads, as old as the blues itself. A traveling musician has a chance encounter in the most unlikely of places with something mystical and powerful, and everything changes. Suddenly, everything is up for grabs, and the music - already rich and historically resonant - takes a whole new direction.

So it was for itinerant troubadour Eric Bibb one night in a London hotel after a gig just a few years ago, when he was approached by a fan carrying a guitar case. Inside the case was a relic from the past that made the hair on the back of Bibb's neck stand on end: a 1930s vintage Resophonic National steel-body guitar that had belonged to Delta blues legend Booker White. In a moment that could only be described as intoxicating, Bibb found himself holding Booker's guitar, and catching a brief but revealing glimpse of all the stories locked within it.

The encounter inspired a song, and the song became an entire album - one that captures the spirit of the original Delta blues of the early 20th century and reinterprets it for a new era.

“That Bibb found his Delta muse through White’s guitar underscores this powerful, intimate album. It’s quiet, soulful music that closely resembles Bibb’s acoustic performances: just voice, guitar and harmonica.” -Blues Revue

What a gorgeous recording featuring mostly just Bibb, nimble-fingered, expressive and strong on acoustic guitar, and singing in a sandy/velvety baritone…Eric Bibb is magnificent in any style, but here in the context of paying tribute to White, he’s made a career-defining album that illuminates and actually enhances the Delta blues experience. Fans of Keb’ Mo’ will love this CD.” -Hittin’ The Note

“Bibb possesses a warmly expressive, unexcitable voice and a fine sense of phrasing. He shines, too, as a guitarist with a quiet and confident approach…With his matchless ease and a poet’s sensibility, he has made Booker’s Guitar the consummation of his affair of the heart, accompanied only by the superb less-is-more harmonica player Grant Dermody.” -DownBeat

Grant Dermody is a local Seattle musician who's harmonica playing is prominently featured on the new album.

Happy Hour: Kacey Evans

Genre: Country , Hip Hop , Jazz , Pop

Pianist and singer Kacey Evans has about as much fun making music as should be allowed. His unnervingly broad repertoire begins with jazz and standards, but includes rock, country, hip-hop, and up-to-the-minute throwaway pop. Drawing on all these elements, he weaves a musical tapestry, which he then drapes over a couple of chairs, and makes a fort. His warm baritone voice, instrumental acumen, sardonic wit, and amenability to requests make him a favorite with audiences who like that sort of thing.

A native of western Washington, Kacey worked as a cruise ship bandleader out of Miami and Los Angeles, and later as a freelance pianist and arranger in Las Vegas. He returned to the Northwest in 2002, when he began producing electronic music. In 2006, following a four-month engagement in Dubai, UAE, Kacey began performing regularly in the Seattle area as a jazz instrumentalist and piano entertainer. He appeared most recently on Earshot Jazz's 2008 Album of the Year, Byron Vannoy's Meridian.

Sarah Harmer w/ Bahamas

Genre: Bluegrass , Country , Folk

  1. Wednesday, September 22 7:30 PM (All ages)

Formerly the driving force behind Weeping Tile, Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah Harmer began her solo career in 1999 playing dates with the Indigo Girls, Great Big Sea, and Moxy Fruvous. Harmer's first album outside of Weeping Tile was a tribute to her father titled Songs for Clem. Credited to Harmer and Jason Euringer, the folksy album was released independently by Harmer, but was eventually given wider release by Universal Canada. Her proper debut album, You Were Here, was released in mid-2000 by Zoe Records, and showed a polished, more mature side to her music than her work with her former band. It wasn't until 2004 that Harmer returned with a follow-up, All of Our Names, while in 2006 she explored her country and bluegrass side in I'm a Mountain, which garnered the singer three Juno Award nominations. 2010 saw the release of her fifth album, Oh Little Fire, which features guest appearances from Neko Case, Julie Fader and James Shaw (Metric).

The Quebe Sisters Band

Genre: Country

When Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe (pronounced kway-bee) take to a stage to play and sing their vintage-style three-part harmony, audiences are mesmerized. Add the swinging rhythm guitar of World Champion fiddler Joey McKenzie and the upright bass of Drew Phelps, and the Quebe Sisters Band becomes a force of nature.

Reaction is the same wherever the Fort Worth-based group goes, and it's been around! Highlights include the Grand Ole Opry, the Kennedy Center, NYC's Lincoln Center as well as major festivals, concert halls and corporate events across North America and Canada.

Performing a refreshing blend of their favorite styles of music - whether it's a western swing classic a la Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, a hot jazz or swing standard (Benny Goodman), vintage country shuffle or western anthem that would do the Sons of the Pioneers proud, the QSB is phenomenal. The house comes down, too, when they launch into bluegrass or a traditional, Texas style fiddle tune.

Recently named Group of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists and recipient of the Crescendo Award by the Western Music Association, as well as nominations for Country group of the year by both the Dallas Observer and Ft. Worth Weekly.
