Asobi Seksu (acoustic ensemble)

Genre: Alternative , Atmospheric , Experimental , Indie , Shoegaze

  1. Wednesday, January 20 7:30 PM (All ages)

Bearing a hyper-stylized and glitzy graphic design sense, a pretty and petite Japanese female singer who sings alternately in Japanese and English, and a band name with a hint of nod-and-a-wink naughtiness (it's claimed to be a Tokyo-based slang term that means "playful sex"), Asobi Seksu comes across like the latest Japanese import, the newest in a long line of ironic shibuya kei indie pop artists following Puffy AmiYumi, Cibo Matto, or Pizzicato Five. In fact, the quartet is based out of New York City, and besides the heavy Japanese pop influences, Asobi Seksu bears comparison both to the British shoegazer bands of the early '90s (My Bloody Valentine in particular) and to New York guitar noise acts ranging from Sonic Youth to Yo La Tengo.

Singer and keyboardist Yuki Chikudate, guitarist James Hanna, bassist Glenn Waldman, and drummer Keith Hopkin formed Asobi Seksu in late 2001, self-releasing their self-titled debut album the following year. Garnering a strong local buzz at a time when the New York club scene was hot again following the success of the Strokes and Interpol, Asobi Seksu came to the attention of the indie Friendly Fire Records, which reissued Asobi Seksu with new cover art in 2004. The album's single, "I'm Happy But You Don't Like Me," raised the band's college radio and online profile; that song and two others from the album, "Sooner" and "Walk on the Moon," were placed in the indie film In Between Days, which won a special jury prize at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

Before recording their second album, Asobi Seksu underwent a major personnel shift, with the core duo of Chikudate and Hanna replacing Waldman and Hopkins with new bassist Haji and drummer Mitch Spivak. Produced by hot New York indie producer/engineer Chris Zane (Human Television, Ambulance LTD, etc.), the more polished, multilayered Citrus was released to solid reviews in May 2006. At some point near the end of the nearly two years spent touring behind the album, Hanna had a revelation that led him to re-think the sound of the band, namely that he was sick and tired of the guitar sound the band had utilized up to then. For the next album, the band (then down to the core duo of Chikudate and Hanna) stripped back the layers of guitar noise and aimed for a more atmospheric and lush sound. Hush was released by new label Polyvinyl in February of 2009. - Courtesy of All Music Guide

For more info please visit:

Bio:

Blasting onto the Seattle scene with an army of vinyl and a head full of funk, Miss Shelrawka (Miss-Shel-RAW-ka) is a welcome transplant from the East Coast to the West, and her delicious blend of genre-bending sets and brain-slamming beats have lit dance floors on fire all over the Emerald City.

Excitement is brewing around this dynamic DJ as she begins to make her mark in the thriving electronic music community of the Pacific Northwest. Miss Shelrawka (aka Michele Kinsey ) first became enamored with dance music through the chunky sounds of house in her native New York and New Jersey. Her love for the beats was so strong that she had to spin them, and soon was playing out drum and bass under the name Lady K, delivering sets full of wild energy to the thirsty and appreciative crowds.

Combining a diverse range of musical interests with a keen sense of the dance floor’s desires, Miss Shelrawka now owns a unique style of funky minimal tech, techno, house and tech-house, influenced by everything from indie punk and 80’s electro to tribal rhythms and classic soul. No matter what, the basslines will be saturated with techy sounds and infused with funk, and the beats will speak to the grooves in your heart.  Miss Shelrawka’s mixing is as clean as her track selection is nasty- this DJ spins only vinyl, choosing to stay true to the pure analog sound. Holding her own as she throws down the filth, Miss Shelrawka truly uses the mixer as a tool and creates velvety blends of multi-genre sounds, spanking the decks and delivering unbruised beats that flow out of her fingers like feral freaks. Catch this fresh new face on her way up as she stays busy at nightclubs around the Puget Sound, raining down smooth beats on slick nights and bringing an original vibe to the musical frontlines.

Black Francis solo and acoustic w/opener Josh Wong

Genre: Alternative , Alternative Rock , Experimental , Indie , Rock

Inverting his stage name from Black Francis to Frank Black, the former Pixies lead singer/songwriter embarked on a solo career after he broke up the band in early 1993; actually, he began recording his solo album before he told the band the news. Working with former Pere Ubu member Eric Drew Feldman, Black occasionally heads into the ferocious post-punk guitar territory that marked such landmark albums as Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, but more frequently he plays up his considerably underrated melodic side. His self-titled 1993 debut album was an adventurous sketchbook of pop styles ranging from surf rock to heavy metal, from Beatlesque pop to new wave. Black's second album, 1994's Teenager of the Year, was a sprawling and diverse album that amplified all the best points of Frank Black.- Courtesy of All Music Guide

Das Vibenbass w/opener Cady Wire

Genre: Experimental , Jazz

DVB has a knack of stunning its audiences with their precise, uncompromising timbre. Geoff Larson and JC Bockman structure the groups’ prime sensibility with flooding bass and raucous drums. Josh Clifford lends his versatile tenor saxophone to passages that require both ferocity and elegance, while Justin Sorensen assertively haunts the sound with his contemporary approach on the vibraphone.

Over the past year Das has shifted its musical ideals and finds their focus on compositionally based instrumental songwriting. It has seen them become much more lyrically grounded with the ability to paint giant canvases of sound. Imagine a movie score being created on stage with the ability to aurally induce strong emotions in its audiences. You can expect to see DVB progress from beautiful passages to dissonant and harsh periods all within a single piece.

He was finally drawn to study percussion at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. Keith's primary musical venture is the solo project Helios, showcasing his skill in percussion, his delicate touch on the guitar, his measured and spacious songwriting, and his self-taught electro-acoustic production. Keith has released for the prestigious UK label Type Records, to much critical-aclaim. His music have been used in films and major television series. LUSINE performing an ambient set

www.lusineweb.com

Jeff McIlwain’s ever morphing musical project, Lusine, has been in existence for over 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff now resides in Seattle. In 1998, he attended Calarts to study 20th century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out a self titled release with Isophlux. Since then, he has been releasing his music on various labels including Ann Arbor's Ghostly International, Hymen, and U-Cover. His latest release, Language Barrier, was somewhat of a departure, focusing less on rhythmic detail, instead highlighting the layers of ambience that were only briefly touched upon in past releases. McIlwain has also contributed tracks to several labels including Mute, !K7, Kompakt, Asthmatic Kitty, and Shitkatapult for various compilations and remix releases. He has performed around the US and abroad including a set at London's esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient performance and collaboration with video artist Scott Sunn at Seattle's Triple Door in April. Jeff has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s “Snow Angels” (with Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell, 2008), and scoring the film "Linewatch” (dir. Kevin Bray, 2009; with Cuba Gooding Jr., Omari Hardwick) He is currently putting the finishing touches on an upcoming album and gearing up a for an impressive international tour schedule, which includes performances at three of the world's most prestigious electronic music festivals (DEMF, MUTEK and Sónar).

KELLY WISE performing selections by early-20th-century inventor of ambient music, ERIK SATIE

Seattle Piano Collective

www.myspace.com/seattlepianocollective

Erik Satie was an important French composer from the generation of Debussy. Best remembered for several groups of piano pieces, including “Trois Gymnopédies” (1888), “Trois Sarabandes” (1887) and “Trois Gnossiennes” (1890), he was championed by Jean Cocteau and helped create the famous group of French composers, Les Six, which was fashioned after his artistic ideal of simplicity in the extreme. Much of his music has a subdued character, and its charm comes through in its directness and its lack of allegiance to any one aesthetic. Often his melodies are melancholy and hesitant, his moods exotic or humorous, and his compositions as a whole, or their several constituent episodes, short. He was a musical maverick who probably influenced Debussy and did influence Ravel, who freely acknowledged as much.

In 1917 Erik Satie coined the term “furniture music” – a minimalist style of “background” music that would precede the electronic music subgenre ‘ambient.’ These and other related ideas were picked up by several composers of the neo-Classical/20th Century school of music, accentuating atmosphere and texture over traditional form and movement.

Kelly Wise (member of the Seattle Piano Collective) is a Seattle pianist and composer. As a classically trained pianist, Kelly has received a wide range of awards and scholarships for his colorful interpretations of piano repertoire. A connoisseur of Satie’s catalog, for this special evening he will be performing the “Trois Gymnopédies” and “Trois Gnossiennes.”

RAFAEL ANTON IRISARRI

Decibel / Miasmah

www.irisarri.org

www.myspace.com/rafaelantonirisarri

Rafael Anton Irisarri's audiovisual works are a dual perspective close-up focus on the micro textures of rustling static-filled sonic surfaces with the wide-open distant tree lined horizons of sunset at dusk. Submerged piano melodies, reverberating guitar tonalities and electronic punctuation all contribute as the converging elements, but it's his hand at electro-acoustic composition that offers the listener the often breathtaking vantage into this sonic world. The combined effect is one of time passing in introspection, remembrances of landscapes and the nature of our relationship with things past as we move toward those yet to come. Plaintively yearning, his art never resigns itself to the stoicism of the melancholic, but is asking, moving, and drawing us into a state of hearing, seeing and recognizing the scale, scope and richness of the natural world and ourselves in the everyday. It's this intersection of images and sounds, both traditional and modernly avant, that make for the balancing act that can be described as something beyond just 'ambient' or 'cinematic'; it brings the listener to a state somewhere between emotionally entranced and psychologically adrift.

Decibel Lounge w/ Skyler, Grindle, Skoi Sirius and Greg Skidmore

Genre: Electronica , Experimental

Decibel Festival Lounge at the Triple Door featuring Skyler (snap'krakl'pop), Grindle (knightriders) Skoi Sirius and Greg Skidmore (audiblebicycleday)

This unique lounge event will commence with the opening of our doors at 4pm on Sunday, 9/27.  Grindle and Skyler man the decks from 4 to 630 with the mainstage showcase kicking off right at 630.  Snap will curate music while the showcase is taking place.  Decibel lounge will continue with Skoi Sirius and Greg Skidmore from 8 to 11.  Snap, Grindle and Pop will take the closing duties.

DJ info:

Greg Skidmore

Greg Skidmore is a Seattle based DJ and sound enthusiast whose earliest electronic music influences include Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, Richie Hawtin, and most notably, Anthony Rother. His musical palette is deep and his style is precision mixed with key elements of electro, IDM, breaks and other forms of dancefloor electronics. Not everything he canes is meant for the floor, however, as mentalism, glitch and other experimental music is exposed as well. Skidmore's sets are sometimes dark and menacing, and other times gentle and optimistic. Challenging the sonic sensibilities of his audience is the goal. Bring your first-aid kit but don't forget your happy feet.

Skoi Sirius:

Skoi Sirius hails from the electronic underground with beats for the body, soul, and mind; his passion injects a cerebral element into his music that lifts his sets to a higher spiritual domain. Self-converted to the electronic side after a thick dose of jungle and drum and bass at the Ice House, an abandoned warehouse in Arizona in the early 00’s, he now walks the path of the underground, pushing boundaries with vinyl-only sets as often as possible. Representing his home of Seattle through the music collectives of audiblebicycleday and The Oracle Gatherings, Skoi spins spiritually-infused IDM lathered breaks and downtempoish beats that take you on an aural voyage through several musical realms of being before bringing you back again with a smile on your face and a groove in your brain.

Marco Benevento

Genre: Experimental , Jam Band , Jazz , Keyboardist , Piano

Marco Benevento is a young keyboardist whose jazz-rooted work has expanded to include indie rock, jam band, and post-rock/experimental influences. Born in 1977 and raised in the northern New Jersey town of Livingston, Benevento studied piano and befriended an aspiring drummer named Joe Russo in a junior-high detention hall. After high school, while Russo migrated westward to Boulder, CO, and fell into the hippie jam band scene there, the more jazz-inclined Benevento moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music, from which he graduated in 1999 after studying keyboards under noted jazz pianist and instructor Joanne Brackeen. Following college, Benevento formed a popular Boston-area improvisational outfit called the Jazz Farmers, which continued when Benevento resettled in New York City in 2001. Running into his old junior-high buddy Russo at a Medeski, Martin & Wood gig, Benevento accepted an invitation to perform a series of duo gigs at the Knitting Factory, which turned into a full-time partnership as the Benevento/Russo Duo. Benevento has released four albums with Russo: Benevento/Russo Duo, Darts, Best Reason to Buy the Sun, and Play Pause Stop. Tying into Russo's roots in the jam band scene, the duo also spent much of 2006 touring as half of former Phish leader Trey Anastasio's backing band. In 2007, Benevento began a live residency at the New York club Tonic, which led to the August 2007 release of Live at Tonic, a three-CD set taken from those shows that ranges from traditional small-combo jazz to post-rock/experimental soundscapes.

Mark Eitzel performs American Music Club w/opener Josh Wong

Genre: Acoustic Rock , Americana , Experimental

Mark Eitzel has made a career out of being miserable. As the singer/songwriter for American Music Club, he established himself as a songwriter of prodigious talent, but one for whom sadness was inescapable, inextricably woven into every chord of the band's music and every line of his lyrics. After seven albums with American Music Club, Eitzel announced the dissolution of the band in 1994 (but AMC has since rebanded). His first post-American Music Club solo effort was "60 Watt Silver Lining," an album that was darker, slower and jazzier than his work with AMC. There's very little respite from the downward spiral of Eitzel's songs, which bring to mind the songwriting skill and emotional weightiness of Leonard Cohen and the ever-dour, occasionally tongue-in-cheek outlook of Morrissey. - Courtesy of Salon.com

Monsters of Accordion 2009: Jason Webley, Stefanko Iancu, Geoff Berner and Eric Stern of Vagabond Opera

Genre: Experimental

The most feared instrument in the world is being demonstrated by four of its most notorious practitioners throughout the Western United States this August. Accordionists Stefanko Iancu, Geoff Berner and Eric Stern of Vagabond Opera will be joining Seattleite Jason Webley and variety of special guests for ten nights of squeezebox mayhem from Los Angeles to Seattle.

"I meet so many amazing accordion players in my travels, and I thought it would be really fun to bring some of the best together," explains Webley, who organized the tour.

The result is a tour-de-force featuring some of the most entertaining solo accordion performers currently working in North America. But don't expect a night of polkas, because these aren't your grandmother's accordion monsters. Instead Webley and company will be delivering five evenings of squeezebox-fueled drinking songs, punk rock covers, experimental pop, dark tangos and sultry dirges.

Portland Cello Project w/ special guests Thao of Thao and the Get Downs & Justin Powers and opener Emily Wells

Genre: Classical , Experimental

"Highly talented, highly collaborative and highly experimental, the Portland Cello Project is a dream team of instrumentalists." Anika Sabin, Willamette Week, Portland

“Independent” and “Orchestra” are not two words you often hear in the same breath. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what The Portland Cello Project is: and indie cello orchestra.

Independently, the intimidating 8-16 cello ensemble, The Portland Cello Project (or, PCP, as their fans affectionately call them), has had a meteoric rise in the vibrant Portland music scene. With a philosophy of collaboration and building a stronger music community, the group went from filling small clubs on word of mouth, to packing 650+ seat halls and turning people away in less than a year.

Cello Project performances are unique and eclectic, as likely to mix a Salt N Pepa cover with Bach as to feature orchestral support to one of the many talented musicians on the Portland scene. (The group has collaborated with Laura Gibson, The Builders and The Butchers, Horse Feathers, Weinland, Vagabond Opera, Norfolk and Western and many, many others.) Besides appearances with a veritable “Who’s Who” list of Portland musicians, the group has performed with such diverse national and international acts as Pink Martini, Japan’s Yoshida Brothers and cellist Matt Haimovitz.

Their irreverant style and superior musicianship makes the group a perfect for the The Triple Door mainstage- this show is not to be missed!
