A Vegas Evening w/ Sonny Turner of the Platters, Bernadette Bascom, Sanjaya Malakar and The Music Project Students

Genre: Gospel , Pop , R&B , Rock , Soul , Special Event

This evening's show is a fundraiser for The Music Project Foundation,an organization that brings music education and the performance experience to youth who are underserved.

The Music Project ties the study of music with a performance experience to create a unique program that  empowers students. Under the tutelage of professional educators and musicians, The Music Project kindles a spark for self-esteem, pride and creativity. Students learn the value and rewards of sustained effort and hard work toward a specific performance goal and the achievement of excellence. Their vision is to have a community where youth are confident and are able to meet the demands of life. To accomplish this we will create an environment that provides a catalyst for a child’s creative thinking, self-esteem and personal growth through music and the performance experience.

The evening will feature performances by Sonny Turner of the Platters, Bernadette Bascom, Sanjaya Malakar and The Music Project Students themselves. The evening will also feature a special Ambassador Honor Presentation to: Mr. Theo Peoples of The Four Tops.

Seattle Secret Music Showcase #9: A Benefit for the Power of Hope & Youth Media Institute

Genre: Benefit , Special Event , World

Acclaimed international artist Gina Salá, former Cirque du Soleil lead vocalist with a repertoire spanning 23 languages, will perform her unique blend of global vocals along with her Ensemble, featuring Dave Bartley, Adam Kessler, Andy Zadrozney, and Steve Rice, along with a rare performance by Seattle artist Ricardo and his musical friends. In addition, youth-made short films from Youth Media Institute will be shown, and there will be performances by Power of Hope youth & guest artists.

Seattle Secret Music Showcases are a series of musical benefit concerts celebrating essential and local (and perhaps lesser known) musicians while supporting worthy local causes. This began as a simple realization—that much of the music that actually intrigues and inspires young musicians (as well as the rest of us) occurs in unexpected places, played by relatively unknown but passionate players, and is not recorded. Through these concerts, we hope to inspire people to bring more live music into their everyday worlds.

All door proceeds benefit The Power of Hope and Youth Media Institute. Dinner and drinks are available at extra cost. Bring your friends - make an evening of it!

The Flatlanders w/ opener Bukka Allen

Genre: Americana , Country Rock , Folk , Special Event

The fact that Texas music titans Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock - on their first go-round as The Flatlanders in 1972 - were completely rejected by the country music establishment is surprising in retrospect but, ultimately, poetic. That each went on to have formidable solo careers is a testament to their talent and determination. Add to this their diverse yet complimentary styles – Joe the street-wise rocker, Jimmie Dale the mystic with the classic country voice and Butch the cerebral folk singer – and you’ve got a story of one of the most extraordinary kinships in American musical history.

It took these Flatlanders a mere three decades to release the sequel to their legendary debut. So the swift arrival of the group's latest New West album in 2005 Wheels of Fortune—which came hard on the heels of 2002’s widely acclaimed Now Again—was a delightful and very welcome surprise. The fourteen songs that make up Wheels Of Fortune are absolute wonders of song craft, sung by three of the most authentic voices in music today.

Joe, Jimmie and Butch initially reunited as The Flatlanders in 1998 to do a one-off recording, at the behest of Robert Redford’s people, for the soundtrack of The Horse Whisperer. It was so much fun, the trio regrouped and cut an entire album. The result, Now Again, was unanimously received as a triumph. Mojo Magazine dubbed them a “country Beatles.” Rolling Stone gave it 3 & 1/2 stars. The Washington Post said, “Given the jaw-dropping quality of the disc, three decades almost seems a reasonable wait.” Billboard raved, “An event record that lives up to all expectations.” Now Again spent 17 weeks at #1 on the Americana charts and 21 weeks on the Billboard Country charts.

The Round "Holiday Show"

Genre: Special Event , Spoken Word

  1. Tuesday, December 01 7:30 PM (All ages)

The Round {55}: Holiday Edition - Taking up true "Round" format, the Holiday Edition takes it up a notch by featuring artists from the past year of Rounds (usually hosted at the Fremont Abbey.)  This year's Holiday Round will include beloved Christmas music and original works performed by Damien Jurado, Mark Pickerel, Kate Tucker and Matt Bishop.  The night's improv band will include local instrumentalists, Emily Peterson (cello), Scott Teske (bass), Lacey Brown (drums), Phillip Kobernick (accordian), Monica Schley (harp).  Poets Buddy Wakefield & Eliana Ellis nestled between each round of musicians will tickle your ears, while your eyes will dance with joy from the work of painter Siolo Thompson.

An intimate evening of music, art, and poetry where three singer/songwriters share the stage with slam poets and live painters.  The Round invites artists to share their craft in a unique and intimate setting.  Putting a spotlight on collaboration and community, the Round has created an event that is as inspiring to the artists as it is the audience.

Founded by Arts Curator Nathan Marion in 2005, The Round developed into a volunteer powered "arts experience" every month on a Monday or Tuesday night in Seattle (and now expanding to Tacoma, Portland, Austin, and Lebanon, PA).  What began as 3 musicians sharing the stage has developed into a multi-arts event with live painters and slam poets joining up to 6 or 7 musicians for a night of arts that will never be replicated. The Round has provided many firsts over its 50 months, including young poets or painters performing for their first time ever in front of an audience, singers collaborating on songs to create unique renditions, and much more.  Past rounds have featured everyone from David Bazan, Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes), Mark Pickerel and Jen Wood to slam poet champs like Danny Sherrard, Karen Finneyfrock, Tara Hardy and Matt Gano alongside painters like Emily Leonard (Nashville), Christen Mattix and Kate Protage.

This night's lineup has yet to be announced, but if previous Round evenings are any indication, it will for sure be a phenomenally talented lineup.
